We are delighted to announce that Neil Boothroyd has joined the Stradia Legal and Commercial team as Senior Consultant. Neil has over 25 years experience specialising in commercial management, dispute resolution and dispute avoidance. He is also a qualified and practicing adjudicator, arbitrator, mediator and expert witness. Neil is highly qualified in the dual disciples of quantity surveying and construction law. I hope you will join us in wishing Neil well and give him a warm welcome to the team.

Due to a rapidly expanding Legal and Commercial department, we are currently recruiting for consultants to manage complex commercial projects, undertake non-contentious work and provide dispute resolution. Ideally consultants will have the following qualifications: BSc Quantity Surveying and MSc Construction Law (or similar). If you are interested, or know anyone who is, please contact me on andrea.rae@stradia.com (no agencies please).

New for 2019, Stradia in conjunction with the RICS, will be running courses on 50 common challenges faced in managing construction contracts and how to resolve the issues to avoid potential delays and added costs on your projects.

In managing construction contracts, a lack of practical experience and unforeseen circumstances often lead to delays and added costs, where there are already tight margins.

Through the course, delegates will identify 50 common challenges faced in managing construction contracts and will work through methods for avoiding and overcoming them, citing key parts of recent legal judgments as authority.  The course will reference a range of construction contracts including JCT Standard Forms and NEC.

By recognising these common issues and understanding effective resolutions, delegates will be equipped with the skills needed to avoid potential risks and the implications on the project time and costs.

Stradia has recently been successful in its bid to provide multi-disciplinary construction consultancy services to Liverpool Mutual Homes.  We look forward very much to working with the team at LMH on a number of different issues over the coming months.

Andrea Rae joined Stradia recently to specialise in developing the legal and commercial services we offer.  Andrea comments:

“I was very pleased to be appointed Head of Legal and Commercial at Stradia earlier this year and have to say, the first six months have flown by! I joined Stradia with over 20 years experience of working in the construction industry,  specialising in commercial management and dispute resolution, with a dual qualification in quantity surveying and construction law. My vision is to expand the existing highly successful Legal and Commercial team, offering both commercial services and an accessible ‘One Stop Shop’ for dispute resolution, working in all sectors of the construction industry both in the UK and internationally. I look forward to working with the expanding team at Stradia and the continually developing client base.”

Stradia is pleased to announce that we have accredited by the Bloom national framework which will allow over 300 local and national public bodies to appoint us directly off the framework.

At the CIPFA Innovation Awards held on 25 April we were thrilled that, together with our client Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and their contractor Mears, we won the Award for Alternative Service Delivery Model of the Year! This was for the open book accounting model that we introduced which, following a lot of hard work, has resulted in over £3m of savings to date – very significant in public sector housing.

The judges’ comment in the Winners Guide was as follows:

“This was an excellent example of taking a problem, being honest about the challenges, and committing to finding a way forward. Sharing both the gains and the pains has been effective and open book arrangements are working actively

This was particularly special as the finalists were drawn from across the public sector from the whole of the UK.

A partnership between Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Mears and Stradia has been shortlisted for a CIPFA ‘Alternative Service Delivery Model of the Year’ Award. The winner will be announced at the Public Finance Innovation Awards dinner to take place at The Brewery in the heart of London on 25 April 2018.
